  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited Institution
  • Minimum 3 years of experience as an Engineer in manufacturing

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prefer the Engineering Degree is in Mechanical Engineering or Manufacturing Engineering, from an accredited institution
  • 5 years of experience in a tool design role
  • Proficient with AutoCAD and SolidWorks
  • Experience in a metal forming industry
  • Experience with tooling for turning and screw machines
  • Experience with measuring instruments (calipers, micrometers)
  • SolidWorks certification

Born from many well-known and long-standing brands, Howmet Fastening Systems, headquartered in Torrance, California, is the premier designer and manufacturer of aerospace and industrial fasteners, latches, fluid fittings and installation tools. Our products are used nose to tail on commercial and military aircraft, as well as on jet engines, industrial gas turbines, automobiles, commercial transportation vehicles, wind turbines, solar power systems, and construction and industrial equipment.

Howmet Fastening Systems (HFS) is seeking a Tool Design Engineer in our Torrance location. HFS is a business unit of Howmet Aerospace, headquartered in Torrance, California. We hold the number one global position in aerospace fastening systems, and we're the North American leader in commercial transportation fasteners. Our high-tech, multi-material fastening systems are found nose to tail on aircraft and aerospace engines. Our products are also critical components of industrial gas turbines, automobiles, commercial transportation vehicles, and construction and industrial equipment.

Summary:

Designs a wide variety of tools, fixtures and components consistent with standard tool configuration, including cutting and forming tools. Works with engineering and manufacturing to identify problems with performance or tool life and recommends and implements solutions or enhancements. Develops and maintains Tool Design and Drawing Standards. Studies specifications and confers with engineering and shop personnel to resolve design problems related to material characteristics, dimensional tolerances, service requirements, manufacturing procedures, and cost of tools. Applies mathematical formulas and standard tool engineering data to develop tool configuration. Selects standard items for incorporation into tool design where possible. Draws preliminary sketches and prepares layout and detail drawings. Modifies tool designs according to trial or production service data to improve tool life or performance. Configures and maintains ePDM, vault, and SolidWorks.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Designs a wide variety of tools, fixtures and components, including cutting and forming tools.
    Prepare drawings, change notices, specifications and inspection standards.
  • Verify and enhance product performance through layout, stress analysis and testing.
  • Investigate manufacturing problems and recommend corrective action.
  • Interaction with manufacturing, Tool Prep, tool vendors, inspection and other department supervisors or managers to solve and correct existing and expected manufacturing problems.
  • Recommends new tool or fixture materials, as necessary, to improve quantity and quality and to cut production costs.
  • Develops and maintains Tool Design and Drawing Standards.
  • Studies specifications and confers with engineering and shop personnel to resolve design problems related to material characteristics, dimensional tolerances, service requirements, manufacturing procedures, and cost of tools.
  • Modifies tool designs according to trial or production service data to improve tool life or performance.
  • Demonstrates a knowledge of and commitment to Lean Manufacturing principles and techniques.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned.

  • Computer skills: proficient with Microsoft Office and CAD software (AutoCAD and SolidWorks)
