Professor of Practice - Costume Technology (Finance)

Description:

The School of Theater and Dance in the College of Arts at the University of Houston is hiring full-time, non-tenure track, Professor of Practice in Costume Technology.

The Professor of Practice will supervise MFA students and student crews in the daily work and operation of the costume shop adhering to the standards and guidelines outlined by the School of Theatre and Dance, and will teach classes as needed.

Specific Job Duties:
-Supervise and train student crews in costume alteration and construction and oversee the building, running, and maintenance of theatrical costumes.
-Train students in costume shop safety.
-Plan and organize costume workflow, adhere to timelines and deadlines delineated by the School of Theatre and Dance production calendars and design contracts.
-Teaches THEA 1111 and THEA 1112 as well as one additional undergraduate course each semester.
-Supervise and train costume focused undergraduate and graduate students in pattern fabrication and alterations of theatrical costumes.
-Supervise over-hire contract staff.
-Along with the Costume Operations Manager conduct and participate in costume fittings and costume staff meetings.
-Works with Costume Operations Manager developing and instituting training methodologies that align with the curriculum of the costume technology coursework.
•-Supervise the maintenance of the costume shop spaces and equipment.
-Maintain the costume shop stock of consumable supplies.
-Attend School of Theatre & Dance meetings, Production Area meetings, and college staff meetings.
-Along with the Costume Operations Manager, can act as a contact person for coordinating the borrowing of costumes.
-Attends dress and technical rehearsals as required by the Costume Operations Manager.
-Act as the Costume Shop Manager and lead draper/patternmaker for the Houston Shakespeare Festival.
-Mentor undergraduate students with an interest in costume technology
-This will be a three year assignment

Education:
MFA in Costume Technology is preferred. Requires the ability and knowledge for analysis and interpretation of procedures and policies and practices attainable through specific education and/or training programs in a specialty or technical field, and commensurate experience as a Costume Shop Manager and/or Cutter/Draper. Advanced vocational training in this professional field is required. BFA or BA degree or Associates degree in a technical specialty program of over 18 months and up to 3 years duration is acceptable. Requires an understanding of basic computer programs and digital technology used in the field. or commensurate experience as a Costume Shop Manager and/or Cutter/Draper
