Position Overview .

The Shop/Field Heavy Equipment Mechanic is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of various types of heavy machinery used in construction operations. This role ensures equipment operates safely and efficiently by performing inspections, diagnosing mechanical issues, and conducting preventative and corrective maintenance.

Key Responsibilities

  • The selected candidate will be required to work in a team environment with other co-workers and managers.
  • Ensure a safe work environment in compliance with all safety policies and procedures using the appropriate tools and equipment for the task.
  • Properly follow all company policies and OSHA / MSHA regulations for safe working procedures.
  • Report any problems to your manager.
  • Follow directions of manager as to daily tasks and expectations for each specific duty.
  • Analyze malfunctions and repairs, rebuild and maintain equipment.
  • Operate and inspect machines and equipment to diagnose defects.
  • Dismantle and reassembling equipment, using hoists as well as hand power tools.
  • Examine parts for damage or excessive wear, using micrometers and gauges.
  • Replace defective engines and sub-assemblies, such as transmissions, electric motors, drums, seals, hydraulic pumps, valves, pistons, rods, gears, etc.
  • Test overhauled equipment to ensure operating efficiency (must be able to operate all equipment).
  • Weld broken parts and structural members.
  • May direct workers engaged in cleaning parts and assisting with assembly and disassembly of equipment.
  • Perform record keeping of time and parts used on the appropriate forms.
  • Plan work procedures and / or possible solutions such as part redesign, substitution of material or parts and rearrangement of parts or sub-assemblies.
  • Perform general cleaning of work areas and maintenance areas.
  • Assist other maintenance department staff in performing the duties necessary to assure the efficiency of operations of equipment / vehicles.
  • Lift, carry and hold materials, tools and supplies.
  • Maintains and repairs heavy equipment, trucks, shops, and non-mobile equipment on a company-wide basis.
  • Services vehicles and equipment to include oil changes, greasing, adding fluids, changing filters and maintaining preventative maintenance schedules.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Education/Experience

  • High school diploma or General Education Degree GED is required.
  • Technical school and certifications preferred.
  • Experience in heavy equipment maintenance and repair, including diesels, hydraulic systems and electrical systems preferred.

Knowledge/Skill Requirements

  • Previous knowledge of heavy equipment preferred**

Work Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical, drug screen and criminal background check.
  • Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
  • Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required.
  • Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required.
  • Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary.
  • Individuals are required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated operations and production areas as stated by OSHA and/or MSHA. Protective equipment that may be required, but not limited to, for this position is: Face Shield, Safety (hard toe) Shoes, and Coveralls.
  • Compliance with all OSHA and/or MSHA regulations.

  • Able to stand, walk, use hands and fingers to manipulate objects or controls, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk and hear.
  • Vision abilities (with correction) include close, distance, peripheral, depth, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Able to work in all weather conditions.
  • The employee is frequently required to sit, climb, and use hands.
  • The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, crawl, kneel, bend, and reach with hand and arms above their shoulders.
  • Must be able to exert up to 10-20 lbs. constantly to move objects, 25-50 lbs. of force frequently, and 50-100 lbs. of force occasionally.
