Job Description

The New York County District Attorney's Office (DANY) has openings for paralegals in its General Counsel's Office (GCO). Paralegals provide a full range of support for Assistant District Attorneys (ADAs) and other staff members in a variety of matters existing at the intersection of civil and criminal law.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assist ADAs in all aspects of civil litigation involving DANY, including conducting document review, assisting with privilege review, and carrying out other assignments.
  • Handle Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) requests, document requests from other government agencies, and document requests pursuant to subpoenas and court orders.
  • Assist ADAs in extradition proceedings relating to fugitives in criminal cases from within and outside New York State. Help coordinate the transfer of fugitives between jurisdictions.
  • Assist ADAs and other staff with other tasks as directed, such as Extreme Risk Protection Orders, restitution collection and asset forfeiture matters, and bail forfeiture matters.
  • Communicate effectively with all staff, members of the public, and other outside parties, both orally and in writing.
  • Coordinate case schedules with courts, law enforcement officials, and outside attorneys.
  • Draft correspondence and legal documents.
  • Assist ADAs with proofreading, cite checking, and locating and compiling files and documents.
  • Perform related administrative and clerical tasks as assigned.

In addition to the Minimum Qualification Requirements, candidates must possess the following:
  • Bachelors degree from an accredited college.

Preferred Requirements/Skills:
  • Up to 2 years of experience based on level.
  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills are essential.
  • Detail-oriented with a high concern for data accuracy and the ability to follow directions and apply proper policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Ability to learn, update, and edit existing proprietary applications, and quickly learn and use various computer systems and records-management systems.
  • Ability to work independently with frequent interruptions, manage deadlines, and adapt to changes in workflow.
  • Willingness to work as a team with all staff members and to share workload as needed to accomplish the Office's mission.

Additional Information:
  • Current office employees: To be eligible for a transfer or promotion, staff must have already served at least 1 year in their current unit/bureau/department and be in good standing. In addition, must meet the minimum and additional qualifications of the position.
  • Looking for candidates that could commit to one (1) year to the hiring Unit.
  • Authorization to work in the United States is required for this position.

Minimum Qualification Requirements:
  1. High school graduation or equivalent and three years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to duties described above; or
  2. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to \"1\" above.
